Woman killed by train

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Woman killed by Encinitas train at same spot her father was killed a year ago By: North County Times | Tuesday, March 4, 2008 8:14 AM PST ∞

ENCINITAS ---- A 35-year-old woman was killed last night by a freight train as she walked near the same train tracks where her father was killed a year ago, Sheriff's officials said.

The crash occurred at 10:04 p.m.Monday in the area of Ashbury Street and North Vulcan Avenue in Leucadia.

The woman's husband told deputies she was attempting to lay a shirt across the tracks to memorialize her father when she fell into the path of an oncoming train, Sgt. William Dreyer of the Encinitas Sheriff's Substation said.

The crash is under investigation, Dreyer said. It's not known if it was accidental or suicidal, he said.

Maybe Toss: Other
Maybe it's just me but this sounds like it could be a suicide, which wouldn't qualify for an award. Thanks to the referenced article I was able to view the general area of the incident in Google Maps. The Street View of that area shows the train tracks on a pretty level & flat area, with hundreds of feet of track visible in either direction. I find it very difficult to believe this woman would not have seen the freight train approaching and would have attempted to lay something on or near the tracks at the precise time that train is passing. It seems way too coincidental to me. Let's see what the others have to say. Thanks, Les.

I am leaning towards a DA vote on this one unless something comes up to prove suicide.

I too am leaning towards a DA. Attempting to lay something on the tracks and suddenly falling does not seem like the usual modus operandi for a suicide. If she has a past history of suicidal tendencies or if evidence shows she became so in the past year, I will recant. Otherwise, this is a very bizarre situation, and worthy of the readers' eyes!
