Up, Up, and Away!

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A tornado resulted in the death of a patient on the campus of Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center (LKRMC), in Independence.

As severe weather approached, LKRMC staff advised all patients, visitors and employees to remain inside and shelter in place. However, the victim, a 51-year-old woman who was there for an outpatient visit, decided to leave the building. An eyewitness saw the patient being lifted up into a funnel cloud and thrown against a vehicle.

Once the funnel cloud passed, LKRMC staff immediately went to the aid of the patient and transported her to the emergency department, where she died due to her injuries.

Let's see:

Reproduction: yep, she's dead. Excellence: I would say walking into a funnel cloud against the advice of several hospital staff ranks pretty high... Self-Selection: check Maturity: 51 years old is certainly mature, and if she had serious mental problems she wouldn't be in there for just an outpatient visit Veracity: confirmed by 2 different sources

Here is an active link to the story: http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/15576037.html. Yes, it appears that she was foolhardy to attempt to leave, but a more humorous write up would do wonders for this story. As it is, it is rather a yawner for me. Thanks for the story, Alex

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
I was in Oklahoma during a tornado warning once and it was nerve wracking enough, even though we were in a conference room in the basement of a well-built building. None of the people in the room, which included people as far away as Guam and Alaska, dared venture outside. This woman sure did exhibit a profound case of stupidity to think she could stand up to Mother Nature that way. Thanks, Alex!
