ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

February 3, 2008. A 50 year man was bird hunting in upstate New York with some buddies and his faithfull K9 companion. They had stopped for a smoke, when he noticed that the dog was carrying what appeard to be a bone from a deers leg. When the man tried to take it away from him, the dog would not relinquish his new found treasure and stayed just out of reach. Frustrated with his dog's dissobedience, the man grabbed his (still loaded) shotgun by the muzzle and began wielding it like a club. As he swung his "club", the dog dodged it and as it struck the ground the gun fired, hitting him in the abdomen. The mans friends called 911 and he was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He did however remain consious long enough to confirm this story to police before he was taken to the hospital (otherwise his poor friends would now be under suspicion of murder). At least he didn't hit the dog!

-The details of this story came to me from the mans friend who was there and called 911.

From the news article:

Man wounded in apparent hunting accident

February 03, 2008

A 50-year-old East Fishkill man was shot in the abdomen during a hunting trip yesterday morning, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office said. Police found the man, who was hunting with two other people, in a wooded area off of Emans Road. The man, whose identity was not released, was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.

An initial investigation suggests the shooting may have been accidental, authorities said.

Thanks for the story. Years ago I was pheasant hunting in a public area. There were way too many people in the field so I went back to the parking lot. No sooner had I gotten there when an ambulance came screaming in. Seems an intrepid hunter without a dog was swinging his shotgun butt at the brush trying to flush up some birds, with similar consequences as in your story. Amazing, isn't it?

While such hunting accidents seem to becoming more common (we've had one or two other stories involving hunters, dogs, and guns) I'll vote for a PA on this one. The news article doesn't provide the details that the eyewitness does, but at least the hunter cleared the eyewitnesses before he expired. Thanks for sending this in.
