Fighting couple run over on Trans-Canada Last Updated: Friday, February 8, 2008 | 12:17 PM ET CBC News

A tragic accident in Chilliwack, B.C., claimed two lives Thursday night, after a couple ran onto the Trans-Canada Highway while having a fight.

A fatal accident closed the Trans-Canada Highway near Chilliwack on Thursday evening for almost four hours while police investigated. A fatal accident closed the Trans-Canada Highway near Chilliwack on Thursday evening for almost four hours while police investigated.

A man and woman were riding in a taxi around 6 p.m. on the highway near Lickman Road when they began to fight, the driver told police.

The driver said he stopped the cab beneath an overpass, and when the woman got out, the man went after her. They ended up in the middle of the highway's westbound lane, where they were first struck by a van and then other following vehicles.

The accident caused a chain reaction that eventually involved as many as eight vehicles, including that of Jerry and Austin Gangur, who said they ran over the pair.

"We thought we'd hit a cow or a piece of lumber, but we'd run over apparently two individuals that had already been hit. We weren't the first ones; I think we were car No. 4," Jerry Gangur said.

The names of the victims have not been released. The two people inside the van were shaken by the incident but otherwise not injured.

Given the chain reaction caused by this incident I was sure some innocent bystanders must have gotten hurt, but after finding a few other articles about this I was amazed to find no injuries to anybody but the two nominees. They certainly could have found a better place to fight. Thanks, Phil!

Nothing like acting out unresolved mother issues in the middle of a highway, what?! Indeed, this must have been SOME fight for these two lovebirds to have just impulsively done what they did! Now they have eternity to figure it all out! I'll go double DA here, and I am glad no one else was hurt! Thanks, Phil!
